Mindful Sports started our summer program a few weeks ago, having small groups of children working with our coaches during the day. It’s been amazing to have children outside again. This reality is only possible due to a myriad of factors that we are taking into consideration.
The first is the local community in NYC. At this moment, the science and data are showing appropriate numbers to dictate a return to small-group activities. Positive test rates are down, and positive tests per 100,000 residents are below important threshold indicators. This allows us to consider holding outdoor activities for children, as per recommendations by the city and state governments. Our next step is developing acceptable prescreening and daily screening health protections for all of our kids and families. We ask families to participate in a prescreening process before arriving on site, checking daily for COVID symptoms. We’re asking children to undergo temperature checks when they arrive for a program. All families are local and from the same general area, limiting transportation and travel.
We’ve developed some new games and activities for children that encourage social distancing and decrease equipment sharing. Finally, we clean and disinfect our equipment several times a day. We’re doing our best to create the safest possible environment for children to return to play. We’re grateful to have this opportunity to work with local families and get kids active and enjoying the rest of the summer. We always want to make the best decisions, taking into account local and state recommendations to help put safety first.
